On Writing... Rabbit

I guess you could say that my interest in writing began with all of the love letters I wrote to my first wife. It'd gag a maggot, the crap that was in them...

So, I started this band - Southpaw. Between myself and the singer, we wrote some great songs. The year was 1995. We were signed and all that but nothing happened. I take that back - the interest for me and the written word came about then...the first song I ever wrote was "Rabbit." You may read it below. The song is about my father who had passed away in 1991. I was 23 years old and just becoming a man. We were just beginning to get to know each other - to enjoy each other as adults. Then he died.

I was heavily into an online community called "CompuServe" - remember that? I was a member of the BASSment - a community of bass players. I got to know a lot of talented and famous bassists - some of whom I still keep in contact with today.

One day I travelled to Connecticut to meet up with a friend, TM Stevens. I brought the newly mastered tape of Rabbit with me and he threw it into the player and blasted my song. We were at The Power Station... he loved the song. I cherish that memory.

Anyway, this is Rabbit. I wrote it as if we were conversing... I miss you dad...so much that hurts completely. Funny, I can still smell him... oh, and he called me rabbit. Yes, as in Peter...

Rabbit

I was glad to have met you.
I never realized we had so much in common.
We were men, we were boys,
We were the world with all its' toys.

This world is big; you should see it.
Stay in my world, because I really need it.

Take care of her. Oh, I will.
Yes sir, I'll make sure she's well.
I should go now. It's getting late.
I'm tired and I've stayed longer than I should have.

And you said rabbit.
My name was rabbit.
You said rabbit.

Where shall I go? Who shall I be?
Image of you? Image of me?
It's been so long, you made the trip.
But it was good to have met you.

Where shall I go? Who shall I be?
Image of you? Image of me?
It's been so long, you made the trip.
But it was so good to have met you.
